School trips and outings for kindergartens and schools: the day at the salaš is already worked out

This page is for kindergarten staff, for teachers in primary schools and for agencies organising school trips and one-day outings. What you get here is not an idea that still has to be built out, but a day that has already been worked out: the coach arrives, a short talk about the salaš — a salaš is a traditional Vojvodina farmstead — and about the salaši of Vojvodina, a tour of the animals, a fruit snack with home-made juice, a short rest, a picnic and play in the yard, and lunch at the end. The order is tried and tested, we agree the timings separately for each group, and alongside the basic programme you can also choose a workshop. The salaš works by prior arrangement only, at least one day in advance, and everything is prepared fresh on the day the group arrives — which is why we agree the number of children, the arrival time and the menu before the coach sets off.

What a day at the salaš looks like

This is the basic programme, in the order in which we run it. Once the coach has stopped, the day moves step by step — nothing is arranged on the spot, because everything has been agreed before arrival.

The order is tried and tested, and we agree the timings separately for each group — according to when the group is able to arrive and how much time it has before departure. If you choose a workshop alongside the basic programme, we also agree in advance where it falls during the day.

At the salaš the children go round the animals: two ponies — Srećko and Lokica — hens, ducks, geese, dogs and cats. The tour is guided and forms part of the day’s programme. Children may feed and pat the ponies, provided an adult responsible for the children’s safety is present.

  • The group arrives.
  • A short talk about the salaš and about the salaši of Vojvodina.
  • A tour of the animals — two ponies — Srećko and Lokica — hens, ducks, geese, dogs and cats.
  • A fruit snack with home-made juice.
  • A short rest, a picnic and play in the yard — the playground has swings and a wooden climbing castle.
  • Lunch.

What the children eat

During the day the children are given a fruit snack with home-made juice, after the tour of the animals, and lunch from a menu agreed in advance — so the children do not order at the table.

Lunch for children’s groups is: home-made noodle soup, pohovana pileća bečka šnicla (breaded chicken escalope, Wiener-schnitzel style) with mashed potato, and home-made hot krofne (doughnuts).

The salaš works by prior arrangement only, and everything that is prepared is made fresh on the day the group comes to us. That is why three pieces of information are essential to us in advance: the number of children, the arrival time and the menu. We plan the preparation around the number of children, so please tell us of any change as soon as you know of it. The food is prepared at the salaš — we do not bring in or serve food from elsewhere.

If there are children in the group who need a special diet — an allergy, a diet or something else — tell us in advance how many such meals are needed and of what type. We will confirm what we can prepare before you confirm your visit. We do not promise every variant in advance; we give a specific answer to a specific number and type.

  • A fruit snack with home-made juice.
  • Home-made noodle soup.
  • Pohovana pileća bečka šnicla (breaded chicken escalope) with mashed potato.
  • Home-made hot krofne (doughnuts).
  • Everything is prepared at the salaš, fresh on the day the group arrives.
  • The number of children, the hour of arrival and the menu are agreed before the group arrives.
  • Special diets: tell us the number and type of meals in advance.

Workshops and programmes

Alongside the basic programme you can also choose a workshop. A workshop is added to the basic programme, so write to us in your enquiry saying which one interests you — we put the offer together according to what you choose.

Alongside the workshops, we take the children round the property on a tractor-drawn carriage — but only when the weather allows: we do not run it in the rain, which makes it the only item in the programme that depends on the weather. Pony rides are not offered — the children feed and pat the ponies, with an adult responsible for their safety present.

These are the workshops and programmes we run, listed by name. For details of an individual workshop, ask in your enquiry and we will confirm them in our reply. Besides those listed we also run other programmes, so if you have a theme you need for your programme, ask what else is possible.

We run the Easter programme with a show and a hunt for the Easter bunny around the salaš.

If it rains on the day of arrival, we replace the activities planned for outdoors with ones in the indoor area. The programme is not cancelled — what changes is what is done.

  • A tractor-carriage ride around the property — only in fine weather.
  • Roman workshop.
  • Wool felting.
  • The history of the city.
  • Biscuit making.
  • A show for children.
  • Easter programme — with a show and a hunt for the Easter bunny around the salaš.
  • Besides those listed we run other programmes as well — ask what else is possible.

An example timetable

The timetable below is an example, not a fixed schedule: it shows that lengths of this kind for the individual parts of the day are workable. We put every day together afresh — according to when the group is able to arrive, how many children are coming and how much time you have before departure.

If the programme has to fit into a shorter or a longer stay, send us an outline of the timetable you need and we will tell you what we can fit into it.

  • 11:00 — the group arrives.
  • 11:00–11:30 — the talk about the salaš and the tour of the animals.
  • 11:30–12:00 — a fruit snack with home-made juice.
  • 12:00–12:45 — workshop.
  • 12:45–13:30 — play in the yard.
  • 13:30–14:30 — lunch.
  • 14:30–15:30 — free time.
  • 15:30 — departure.

For teachers and kindergarten staff

The hardest part of the job is usually writing a programme you will have to defend to the school and to the parents. Here you are not writing it from scratch: the day is already worked out, the meals are set, and the workshop is chosen and goes into the programme under its own name.

There is a playground in the yard: swings, a gravel surface and a wooden climbing castle.

Teachers, kindergarten staff and guides who are leading the group do not pay. The coach stays parked at the salaš for the whole visit, the approach is a hard surface, and the toilets are at the salaš and free of charge — the whole programme takes place at the salaš, with no transfers during the day.

The salaš works by prior arrangement only: we do not take guests who have not booked, so it is known in advance who is coming that day and everything is prepared for the group that has booked.

For subjects in history and nature the location provides the content by itself. Sremska Mitrovica is ancient Sirmium, one of the four capitals of the Roman Empire and the birthplace of several Roman emperors, and it lies on the official cultural route the Roman Emperors Route. The salaš is 5 km from the centre of the city, so a tour of the city and a day at the salaš can be combined into the same outing. The salaš itself was built in 1965 and is run by the Jovanović family, so the children hear the story of the salaši of Vojvodina on one particular salaš.

Insurance for the children does not go through the salaš — it is arranged by the agency, that is by the school or the kindergarten.

There is a first-aid kit at the salaš.

There is a plan for bad weather. The indoor area has 80 seats, but when the weather turns during a visit we take up to 100 children inside — so even a group of more than eighty has somewhere to go.

  • The day’s programme is ready — arrival, the talk about the salaš, the tour of the animals, the snack, play in the yard, lunch.
  • Teachers, kindergarten staff and guides who are leading the group do not pay.
  • The coach stays at the salaš for the whole visit; the approach is a hard surface.
  • Toilets: 4, free of charge.
  • The whole programme is at the salaš — no transfers during the day.
  • Sremska Mitrovica is ancient Sirmium, 5 km from the salaš: suitable for history and nature topics.
  • You choose the workshop by name; we confirm the details in correspondence before arrival.
  • There is a first-aid kit at the salaš.
  • Playground in the yard: swings, gravel and a wooden climbing castle.
  • In the rain: outdoor activities are replaced by indoor ones, up to 100 children.

For agencies

For an agency this is a single stop that settles the whole middle part of the day: the meal, activities for the children and toilets in the same place, with parking for the coach. We put the offer together group by group — send us the number of children, the number of adults leading them, the date and time of arrival, and the workshop if you are taking one.

We work exclusively with groups that have booked, of at least 20 people, arranged at least one day before arrival. We confirm the hour of arrival separately for each date, because the food is prepared fresh on the day.

Capacity is 80 seats indoors, and up to 120 guests when the outdoor area is used as well. The car park takes two coaches at the same time and a further 30–40 cars, and the approach is a hard surface. Other information for groups is on the page for tourist groups: /grupe/.

Payment is most often in cash. Cashless payment goes through the Turistička organizacija grada Sremska Mitrovica. For foreign agencies and guests we issue documents in euros.

You confirm the final number of guests no later than seven days before arrival; if you book later than that, we agree the number at the time of booking. The confirmed number of guests is charged, including when fewer people arrive than were confirmed. Groups arriving through an agency: the agreed amount is charged whether or not the group arrives. The salaš holds the slot on that day and takes no other guests, while the agency charges for its own service under its contract. We state the full cancellation terms in the offer.

  • Minimum group: 20 people; booking at least one day in advance.
  • Capacity: 80 seats indoors, up to 120 guests with the outdoor area.
  • Parking: two coaches at the same time and about 30–40 cars.
  • The arrival time is agreed and confirmed for each date.
  • Offer on request — we do not publish prices.
  • Teachers, kindergarten staff and guides who are leading the group do not pay.
  • More information for groups: /grupe/.
  • Payment: cash, or cashless through the Turistička organizacija grada Sremska Mitrovica.
  • Final number of guests: no later than 7 days before arrival; the confirmed number is charged.

Send us the number of children, the date and the workshop that interests you — we will send an offer back

Three pieces of information are enough for us to make an offer: how many children are coming (and how many adults are leading them), which date and roughly what time of arrival, and which workshop interests you. On that basis we send an offer with a proposed programme and menu, and then we agree the exact hour of arrival together. Write to salas.isailovi@gmail.com or call +381 65 5506929. We work by prior arrangement only, at least one day before arrival, because everything is prepared fresh on the day the group comes.
